Our featured chefs, Frank Ostini and Valerie Gordon along with BBQ expert & author Steven Raichlen, will accompany you on your journey through all things barbecue.
Legendary Grill Master and Hitching Post II owner, Frank Ostini, is a tenured BBQ Bootcamp instructor, and runs one of the most successful steakhouses on the Central Coast.
Bestselling author, Steven Raichlen, has written over 30 books including The Barbecue Bible, How to Gril, Planet Barbecue, Project Smoke, and his latest book, Project Fire.
One of Los Angeles’s top chocolatiers and the author of the cookbook Sweet, a James Beard Award Finalist, Valerie Gordon will serve as the “Sweets” specialist at BBQ Bootcamp. Valerie will be demonstrating a host of grilled desserts.
The BBQ Bootcamp morning sessions will cover all the aspects of BBQ, from the best way to start a fire to what to do with spice rubs; afternoons are free for horseback riding, golf or a visit to the spa; and evenings give you a chance to interact with local guest chefs and winemakers who will be on hand to create feasts designed to further fire-up your grilling passions.

Author, journalist, lecturer, and TV host, Steven Raichlen is the man who reinvented modern barbecue. His 31 books include the international blockbusters The Barbecue Bible and How To Grill, and the New York Times bestselling Planet Barbecue and Project Smoke (Workman Publishing). His new book, Project Fire, explores contemporary cutting-edge grilling techniques from around the world. Raichlen’s books have won 5 James Beard Awards and 3 IACP-Julia Child Awards and been translated into 17 languages. Forge books published his first novel, Island Apart.
An award-winning journalist, Raichlen has written for The New York Times, Wall Street Journal, Esquire, GQ, and all the major food magazines. In 2015, he was inducted into the Barbecue Hall of Fame.
Steven Raichlen hosts the popular TV shows Steven Raichlen’s Project Fire and Project Smoke, Primal Grill, and Barbecue University on Public Television, and stars in two French language TV shows: Le Maitre du Grill and Les Incontournables de BBQ. His latest show, Steven Raichlen Grills Italy, airs on Gambero Rosso in Italy.
Founder of Barbecue University at the Broadmoor resort in Colorado Springs, Raichlen has lectured on this history of barbecue at institutions as diverse as Harvard, the Library of Congress, and the Smithsonian. He holds a degree in French literature from Reed College in Portland, Oregon, and studied medieval cooking in Europe on a Thomas J. Watson Foundation Fellowship. He was also awarded a Fulbright. He and his wife, Barbara, live in Miami and Martha’s Vineyard.

From a childhood love of decadent sweets, Valerie developed a lifelong passion for discovering and creating delicious moments with food. She has forged a varied and unique career, equally adept at running fine restaurants as she is working in a busy kitchen.
After spending her formative culinary years in San Francisco, amidst the early days of the farm-to-table movement, she relocated to Los Angeles to run the fabled Les Deux Cafes, one of the most celebrated (and missed) restaurants in Hollywood history.
